Orthogonal, linear cutting tests of bamboo culm with 0°-90° and 90°-0°cutting situations were made (Figs. 1, 4 and 6). Air-dried specimens of Mosochiku (Phyllostachys pubescens MAZEL), which were fixed to the experimental apparatus equipped with a two-dimensional dynamometer, were cut. The normal (N) and frictional (F) forces acting on the rake face were measured. Using these components, the frictional coefficient (μ) on the rake face was calculated by μ = F/N. The effects of the distance (ℓR) from outer layer in the radial direction of interface of bamboo culm and cutting situations on tendencies of variations of the cutting-force components and μ were clarified.
